The South Deep Education Trust, or simply referred to as SDET, is an organization that strives to provide financial assistance to well-deserving scholars. The South Deep Education Trust is offering bursary programmes for academically-talented students who require immediate financial assistance for their studies. The SDET Bursaries is a moving vehicles that provides young individuals with the required accessibility and support to continue their respective studies. By investing a good portion of their funds into the education of well-deserving scholars, it is hoped that they can advance far in life and pace a successful career in any mining related position.

The SDET Bursary Programme are formed under their Social and Labour Plan (SLP). Potential awardees are assess from how much they need the financial assistance. Please be kindly informed that awardees of the bursary programme are required to spend the number of years they were sponsored working back for South Deep. This, however, depends if there are any available positions during the work back period.

The SDET Bursary Programme is offered on an annual basis. The number of bursaries provided depends on the budget and availability of each year. Typically, between 9-14 bursaries are awarded annually. The bursary programme will be offering preference to certain designated groups to promote demographic representation.

The SDET Bursaries are offered for students who plan on pursuing any one of these Mining-related fields:

  • Metallurgical and chemical engineering
  • Mining engineering and support services
  • Electrical and mechanical engineering
  • Geology
  • Ventilation

The purpose behind the SDET Bursary Programe is to fill in the increasing gap between scarce skills and job vacancies that are typically harder to fill in. Through this initiative, the SDET has a better chance of promoting their line of work and garner students’ interest in joining the industry.

At the moment, the SDET Bursary Programme are given out to external applicants (local community members) as well as internal applicants (children/relatives of current employees). All applicants are expected to pursue a tertiary qualification that has something to do with the Mining industry.

Awardees of the SDET Bursary Programme will be entitled to coverage for items such as tuition expenses, prescribed study materials, a stipend, and accommodation costs.

SDET (South Deep Education Trust) Bursary Requirements
Interested candidates of the SDET Bursary must fulfill an extensive eligibility criteria to move forward. Each of these items below are the basic requirements that you will need to meet before proceeding with your registrations. The selection committee will be assessing your potential based on these items. Failure to fulfill all of them could put you in a disadvantageous position during registrations.

The SDET Bursary Requirements are as follows:

  • Currently an undergraduate student in a tertiary institution
  • Is not receiving any financial assistance from another bursary programme
  • First-time candidates must possess an average aggregate score of at least 60%
  • Does not categorize themselves as dependents of Gold Fields employees
  • Pursuing a study field that has something to do with the South African mining department
  • Recognized as a Historically Disadvantaged Person
  • Coming from an underprivileged, low-income background
  • Resident of the surrounding communities around the South Deep mine/Labour Sending Areas.

How to Apply SDET (South Deep Education Trust) Bursary 2021-2022
Applications for the SDET Bursary are conducted online. To get started, all candidates must access the Official SDET Trusts Website. Candidates must check the whether the bursary programme is open for applications or not. This is because the availability status of each programme depends from one time period to another.
